The Bible records that Jesus was laid in a manger after His birth. Luke 2:7 - And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
This manger was likely a feeding trough for animals. The word manger comes from a word meaning a crib at which livestock are fed.
This highlights Christ's humble beginnings and this manger specifically served as a sign to the shepherds of how they will recognize the baby they are looking for. Luke 2:12 - And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.
