What Does Hebrews 11 Teach Us About Faith?

Updated: 2 days ago

By Pastor Chad Fisher, sharing biblical insights to inspire and strengthen your faith and relationship with God.

Hebrews 11 is one of the most faith-packed chapters in the Bible. Often called the "Hall of Faith," it showcases men and women who believed God against all odds. But it’s more than a list of names—it’s a roadmap for living by faith today. If you want to understand what real, biblical faith looks like, Hebrews 11 is your guide.

Faith Is the Foundation

Hebrews 11:1 - "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Faith isn’t wishful thinking. It’s a confident trust in God’s promises, even when we don’t see immediate results. This verse defines faith not by outcomes, but by our internal posture of trust.

Faith in Action: Biblical Examples

Hebrews 11 doesn’t just describe faith—it illustrates it. Here are a few standouts:

  • Abel offered a better sacrifice by faith.

  • Enoch pleased God and was taken without dying.

  • Noah built an ark in dry land because he trusted God’s warning.

  • Abraham obeyed and moved, even without knowing where he was going.

  • Sarah believed God for a child in her old age.

  • Moses chose to suffer with God's people rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasures of Egypt.

  • Rahab welcomed the spies and was spared. These stories show that faith is never passive. It acts, moves, builds, obeys, and risks.

Faith Looks Forward

"These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar..." (Hebrews 11:13). True faith looks beyond this life. It holds fast to eternal promises, trusting that God will fulfill them in His time.

Faith Overcomes and Endures

Verses 32–40 tell of people who conquered kingdoms, stopped the mouths of lions, and endured torture, imprisonment, and persecution—all by faith. Faith is not just for the mountaintops. It’s for the fiery furnace, the lion’s den, and the long nights of waiting.

What Hebrews 11 Teaches Us About Faith

  • Faith trusts God before the breakthrough.

  • Faith obeys when it doesn’t make sense.

  • Faith endures when the answer is delayed.

  • Faith moves even when the outcome is uncertain.

  • Faith sees the invisible and believes the impossible.

Live Your Own Faith Legacy

The chapter ends by pointing ahead to us. Hebrews 12:1 says, "Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses... let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." You are called to live by faith just like they did.
