Before defining what the gift of the word of wisdom is, let's distinguish and define the differences between wisdom and knowledge:
1. Knowledge is information (usually coming from what is learned, facts, education).
2. Wisdom is what to do with that information – the ability to use knowledge correctly (usually coming from experience, good judgment, maturity).
Three general truths about wisdom and knowledge
a. Wisdom and knowledge are interdependent, they need each other.
b. Wisdom needs knowledge upon which to act.
c. Knowledge must be directed by wisdom to be used wisely.
We see a Biblical example of this in Proverbs 15:2 - The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly. (YLT - The tongue of the wise maketh knowledge good.)
Difference Between A Word of Knowledge and The Word of Wisdom
The Word of Knowledge is a supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit about certain facts concerning people, places, or things in the past or present.
The Word of Wisdom is a supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit about God’s divine (coming from the mind and will of God) purpose and plan.
Often word of knowledge is based on the past and present, and the word of wisdom speaks about what to do now or in the future.
The Word of Knowledge and the Word of Wisdom oftentimes work together. For example, God will give a word of knowledge (about a past or present situation) but then offer supernatural understanding, through a word of wisdom, of how to apply that knowledge being presented and bring about His divine purpose and plan.
What Is The Gift Of The Word Of Wisdom
A Word of Wisdom is a small portion of God’s total wisdom supernaturally imparted by the Holy Spirit. It is operated only under God’s control through the Holy Spirit. A Word of Wisdom is not natural wisdom, it’s not the wisdom from the dealings of life, it doesn’t come from years of experience, it is not gained through life experience or age. It is directly from God Himself giving instruction and direction of what to do, how to act, how to think, or what purpose and plan God has. It gives wisdom for moving forward.
Note: The Bible tells us that everyday practical wisdom is available to every believer through prayer.
Proverbs 9:10 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
James 1:5 - If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Proverbs 2:6 - For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
God has promised to give us wisdom, which we could call general wisdom to deal with everyday life. God will give us that type of wisdom, but it is important to remember that is not the same as the supernatural manifestation of the word of wisdom.
How does a Word of Wisdom come?
A word of wisdom can come in different ways. It can come through one of the vocal gifts (prophecy or through tongues and interpretation). The word of wisdom may also come through a vision or a dream, an angel, a verse of scripture (although it is not simply a Bible verse) or even the audible voice of the Holy Spirit.
Examples Of The Word Of Wisdom
PHILIP
Acts 8:26-29 - Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise up and go toward the south on the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is desert. So he rose up and went. And there was a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in command of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship. He was returning, sitting in his chariot and reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit said to Philip, “Go to this chariot and stay with it.”
WISE MEN
Matthew 2:12 - But being warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.
JOSEPH
Matthew 2:13 - Now when they departed, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and escape to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word. For Herod will seek the young Child to kill Him.”
NOAH
Genesis 6:13-36 - So God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh is come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Now I will destroy them with the earth. Make an ark of cypress wood for yourself. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. And this is how you must make it: The length of the ark will be three hundred cubits, the width of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. Make an opening one cubit below the top of the ark all around; and you must set the door of the ark on the side. Make it with a lower, a second, and a third story.
IMPORTANT
The Word of Knowledge and/or Word of Wisdom are not to be used to embarrass/manipulate someone. All the gifts are to build up, for the benefit of others, for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:7 - But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to everyone for the common good.
